Card HousesCard stacking (building structures made from playing cards, card houses) no longer pertains to simple structures–the art has risen to feature replicas of modern day landmarks, towers, palaces, buildings, and the list goes on and on. Card structures are now being built in excess of 20 feet tall and can take days to complete.Card stacking in its purest form does not include the use of any adhesive or solvent to ensure the cards stay in place. True card stacking stands on its own, which each card supporting the other so that the structure truly supports itself. When created correctly, card houses are even able to support additional weight from various objects. A common misconception is that card houses are fragile and can fall apart at any moment. Due to the amount of decks used, and the weight of the individual decks themselves these structures can actually be very strong and stable. But as The Guinness World Record holder Bryan Berg has noted, the structures are much more stable than they may appear. When building his structures, Bryan follows a grid-type format, which ensures that each card is securely in place and when complete, is strong enough to prevent other cards from moving. In addition to grids, many people stack cards in a triangular format–and the overall concept is the same as the grid format–each card is strategically placed so that it is able to aide in the support of the overall structure. |
